NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Country singer LeAnn Rimes is getting professional help for anxiety and stress.

Her publicist, Marcel Pariseau, says Rimes has voluntarily entered a 30-day in-patient treatment facility "to learn and develop coping mechanisms."

Pariseau says Rimes isn't seeking treatment for an eating disorder or substance abuse, adding that "while privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

The 30-year-old Rimes checked into the undisclosed facility Wednesday.

Rimes is keeping her weekend tour commitments through September during breaks from treatment.

The statement was first reported Thursday on People.com.

Boeing tests CST-100 parachute protector

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Boeing Company recently completed a jettison test of its forward heat shield, which will protect the parachutes of the company's CST-100 spacecraft during future missions to and from low Earth orbit. The forward heat shield jettison will start the parachute deployment sequence and provide a safe landing for the capsule and its crew members. The test was part of Boeing's work supporting its funded Space Act Agreement (SAA) with NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP) during Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2).

"Without the parachutes, the crew wouldn't survive landing. We need to slow them down to a safe landing velocity," said Mike Burghardt, director of Spacecraft Development for Boeing's CST-100. "It is key to be able to get that forward heat shield released at the right time so we can deploy the parachutes."

Testing of the composite-based forward heat shield took place at Bigelow Aerospace's headquarters outside of Las Vegas on June 5, 7 and 11. Surrounded by dry mountain air, Burghardt and his team set up a series of high-speed and high-definition cameras to capture the shield's deployment, a sequence that begins with four piston-like thrusters firing at an altitude of between 20,000 and 30,000 feet. Once the thrusters fire, they are designed to push the shield out of the way of the spacecraft, allowing the drogue parachute to deploy to stabilize the descending crew module followed by the three main parachutes.

During the test, accelerometers and strain gauges measured the shocks and loads that were transmitted during the deployment sequence. The team also tested the ability to jettison the forward heat shield if one of the thrusters were to fail. The thrusters connect to the forward heat shield using breakaway joints, which are designed to fail if one of the thrusters did not fire during re-entry.

"The joint is designed so it won't break when exposed to nominal loads. However, if we did have a thruster failure case, the joint would break to allow the heat shield to be jettisoned from the spacecraft," Burghardt said.

The shield is an adaptation of what Boeing used for its Apollo moon capsules and is similar to the design NASA's Orion spacecraft will use for human exploration missions to deep space.

In March 2011, the agency signed a $92.3 million SAA with the company for the continued development of its Crew Space Transportation (CST), which is a reusable, capsule-shaped spacecraft designed to carry up to seven people, or a combination of people and cargo to low Earth orbit. Optional milestones valued at $20.6 million also were approved and will be completed later this year.

Boeing also tested the CST-100 service module propellant tanks on July 2 to make sure they can handle the extreme requirements of a launch abort scenario.

"The earlier you can do testing and the more testing you do accelerates what you learn," Burghardt said. "There's nothing like building something and then going to test it to find something you didn't think you knew about or you didn't remember."

Boeing will have the opportunity to conduct more testing on its CST-100 during NASA's Commercial Crew Integrated Capability (CCiCap) phase, which began earlier this month with three American companies that are advancing integrated spacecraft and launch vehicle designs. Boeing partnered with United Launch Alliance to integrate its capsule with an Atlas V rocket for launches to complete its integrated Commercial Crew Transportation System. CCiCap will set the stage for a crewed orbital demonstration mission in 2016, the start of operations that will lead to providing commercial transportation services to the agency to send crews to the International Space Station.

Wife of Russian opposition activist gets jail

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian opposition activist was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison in a review of her drug-related case ?twice as long as prosecutors had requested in a ruling that drew immediate opposition outrage.

Taisiya Osipova and her supporters have maintained that police planted four grams of heroin in her home in 2010 in revenge for her refusal to testify against her husband, Sergei Fomchenkov, also a senior figure in The Other Russia opposition movement. A witness for the defense testified at the trial that he saw a police officer put the drugs in Osipova's apartment.

Osipova had originally been sentenced to 10 years, but a higher court ordered a review of her case.

Tuesday's unexpectedly harsh verdict comes two weeks after three members of punk provocateur band Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison for a surprise anti-Vladimir Putin performance in Moscow's main cathedral. The decision sparked criticism in Russia and abroad as disproportionate.

It's also being viewed as an ominous sign ahead of the trial of 11 people who were arrested on suspicion of taking part in clashes with the police at a protest rally in May this year.

Eduard Limonov, the leader of The Other Russia party, told Interfax on Tuesday that "this verdict is not only a political one, it's also terrifying revenge."

Fomchenkov reported the verdict on his Twitter account. The court in Smolensk was not available to confirm the verdict.

Prosecutors had asked for four years in prison for Osipova.

Osipova, 28, has been in jail since her arrest in 2010 and was originally sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 2011. A higher court in February overturned that decision, ordering the review of her case, while Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview that the sentence was too harsh.

Left-wing opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov described the verdict in his Twitter as "a triumph of lawlessness and cynicism."

Osipova was one of the most prominent names on a list of people activists described as political prisoners submitted to then-President Medvedev in February.

Mikhail Fedotov, head of the presidential council on human rights, in an interview with the Interfax news agency on Tuesday described the verdict as a "legal mistake."

Like her husband Osipova is a member of The Other Russia, although he hasn't been active since her daughter was born in 2006.

Opposition activists have staged regular protests against Osipova's prosecution, arguing that charges against Osipova were aimed to pressure her for information on her husband, Limonov's right hand man, who was trying to get the movement officially registered as a political party at the time of her arrest.

Osipova's supporters also said that witnesses confirmed police discovering drugs at Osipova's place were members of pro-Kremlin youth groups.

Police searched Fomchenkov's Moscow apartment shortly before Osipova's arrest in connection with "an economic case," details of which were never communicated to the Other Russian functionary.

Osipova's lawyers on Tuesday pledged to appeal the ruling. The Other Russia activists are planning one-man pickets across Moscow on Saturday to protest the verdict.

Starting on Sunday, hundreds of earthquakes have shaken Imperial County, a rural area east of San Diego. Most have been minor, but some have been felt in surrounding counties and have clocked in as high as magnitude 5.5 and 5.3.

In the small city of Brawley, where the quakes are centered, they have damaged windows, knocked goods off store shelves, and bounced trailer homes off their foundations.

Why is this happening, and could the swarm be a precursor of the "Big One"?

Seismologists are confident the answer to the second question is "no." They say the quakes around Brawley may continue for several days, but judging from history, such swarms are not predictive of larger temblors along two major geologic fault lines in Southern California ? the San Andreas and Imperial faults.

As to what caused this week's swarm, researchers say it has to do with the region's distinctive geology.

"Compared to the rest of California, it's thinner crust, and hotter, and [has] more fluids," says Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the US Geological Survey in Pasadena, Calif. She describes the imperial Valley as "one big bowl of sediment."

"Those would likely be reasons that contribute to this," Ms. Jones says. "But we don't yet have the details of the physics."

The earth's thin crust in the region, and the proximity of hot magma beneath it, relates to the Imperial Valley's location at the top end of a fault in which tectonic plates are moving apart from one another to form the Gulf of California. The Brawley area, 100 miles east of San Diego, is "like the very end of a ridge that's trying to spread open. It's actually probably giving up on spreading open," Jones says.

When earthquakes make news, the event is more commonly a major quake followed by smaller aftershocks.

In the Brawley area, what are occurring instead are multiple events per hour. Such swarms are more often linked to active volcanoes than places like Southern California with little volcanic activity.

"There's potential for more in the Imperial Valley" this week, Jones says. Monday has been a quieter day, but still has seen quakes at a rate of several per hour.

It's significant, Jones says, that the Brawley zone has no big fault. For an earthquake to reach magnitude 7, a fault must be at least 50 kilometers long.

While not having large faults, the city is wedged fairly close to the Imperial Fault (where magnitude 7 quakes have occurred) and to the southern end the San Andreas Fault. Both those are "transform faults," where tectonic plates essentially slide along each other horizontally.

"The ability of an earthquake to trigger other earthquakes dies off with distance quite quickly," Jones says. The larger faults are far enough away from Brawley that, amid past quake swarms there, "we've never seen them followed by San Andreas activity."

Translation: This week's swarm, although felt sometimes in coastal population centers, appears to have few implications for the rest of California.

It is significant, however, for residents of the Imperial Valley, a desert region with irrigation-centered agriculture. The shaking Sunday put many residents on edge, and some 20 mobile homes at a trailer park were pushed off their foundations, the Associated Press reported.

The swarm also serves as a reminder, in California and elsewhere, that people be prepared for emergencies including quakes. The Southern California Earthquake Center offers a seven-step guide to preparedness on its "earthquake country" website.

Why don?t you sell your mat?? 14. All in the crowd then grew sad. ?Actually, you know what you can do?? said Jesus. ?You can reimburse me for my roof. Or I?ll sue you.? And all were amazed. 15. ?We have never seen anything like this,? said the crowd. The Very Poorly Prepared Crowd

The day was drawing to a close, and the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, ?Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place.? 2 But Jesus said to them, ?Why not give them something to eat?? They said, ?We have no more than five loaves and two fish ? unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.? 3 For there were about five thousand men. Better that their stomachs are empty than they become overly dependent on someone in authority to provide loaves and fishes for them on a regular basis. Where will it end? Will I have to feed them everyday?? ?No, Lord,? said Thomas, ?Just today. When they are without food. But he distributed none to the crowd, because they needed to be taught a lesson. So Jesus ate and he was satisfied. The disciples somewhat less so. ?Delicious,? said Jesus. What was left over was gathered up and saved for Jesus, should he grow hungry in a few hours. The very poorly prepared crowd soon dispersed.

There were too many poor people always asking me for charity. They were as numerous as the stars in the sky, and they annoyed me. Second, once people start spending again, like this rich young man, the Galilean economy will inevitably rebound, and eventually some of it will trickle down to the poor. Blessed are the patient! But giving the money away, especially if he can?t write it off, is a big fat waste.? The disciples? amazement knew no bounds. ?But Lord,? they said, ?what about the passages in both the Law and the Prophets that tell us to care for widows and orphans, for the poor, for the sick, for the refugee? New insights to the function of molecular chaperones

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Heidelberg molecular biologists have gained new insights into the function of so-called molecular chaperones in protein synthesis. The team headed by Dr. G?nter Kramer and Prof. Dr. Bernd Bukau of the DKFZ-ZMBH Alliance, a research association between Heidelberg University's Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), was able to demonstrate how a molecular chaperone in bacterial cells can influence the formation of the three-dimensional structure of new proteins.

"Our findings have put an end to a scientific controversy about the point in time within protein synthesis at which the folding of a protein into a defined three-dimensional structure begins and the roles played by individual factors involved in the process," says Prof. Bukau. The research findings have been published as an online article in Molecular Cell and are to appear in the journal's print version as well.

Proteins are produced by ribosomes, large molecular machines translating genetic information into long chains of amino acids. But these so-called polypeptide chains only turn into functional proteins after they have been folded into stable three-dimensional structures. Incorrectly folded proteins can have devastating effects on cells or even the whole organism. Examples are neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease. To prevent folding defects, cells have whole arsenals of folding assistants referred to as molecular chaperones. Some chaperones support folding during protein synthesis at the ribosome. Up to now, the precise details of this complex process were largely unknown.

The Heidelberg molecular biologists have now succeeded in supplying a more exact description of a chaperone called Trigger Factor from the bacterium Escherichia coli. To this end, all the components required for protein synthesis were isolated from bacterial cells and the protein folding process was observed during synthesis in the test tube. "It turned out that in the beginning of synthesis the growing polypeptide chain is prevented from folding by its spatial proximity to the ribosome," says Dr. Kramer. "This inhibition is reduced in the course of synthesis by the fact that the already synthesised parts of the growing chain are increasingly moved away from the ribosome by the addition of new amino acids." Trigger Factor prolongs the effect of the ribosome and also interferes with folding. In the course of translation it binds to the ribosome and the growing polypeptide chain, thus also preventing the folding of parts of the protein already further away from the ribosome. Accordingly, the ribosome and Trigger Factor act in concert to confine premature folding of the nascent polypeptide.

"The surprising thing is," says Dr. Kramer, "that Trigger Factor can also unfold parts of the protein." This activity of Trigger Factor can reverse premature folding attempts of the growing polypeptide chain and facilitate a new folding attempt if the earlier one was unsuccessful. "The essential point is that Trigger Factor only develops unfolding activity when it is attached to the ribosome. In other words, it cannot unfold fully synthesised proteins."

In conjunction with other findings produced by the Heidelberg research team, these new discoveries now represent an extended model of the molecular mechanism of protein folding. At the early stage of protein synthesis, the ribosome prevents premature folding of the growing polypeptide chain. Other important modifications to the protein chain have to be performed here as well. Trigger Factor is not involved at this stage. The binding of Trigger Factor keeps the growing polypeptide chain unfolded until sufficiently large parts of the protein are synthesised so that productive folding can take place. But if the protein has already undertaken premature folding steps when Trigger Factor binds, these steps can be reversed by the unfolding activity of Trigger Factor. In this way the formation of harmful proteins in the cell can be actively prevented. "These findings represent an important advance towards a more detailed understanding of the conversion of genetic information into functioning proteins," says Prof. Bukau. "This process is indispensable for the survival of every cell and every organism."
