Twitter Not Yet A Mainstream Technology - Business Insider

Twitter is a great product, and millions of people have become addicted to using it for many hours per day (including me).

Investors have also gone bananas over the company, bidding its valuation up higher than $10 billion.

And advertisers have had very encouraging things to say about the power of Twitter as an advertising and customer-service channel.

But given the mind-boggling ubiquity of Twitter awareness--the little bird and @handles and quoted tweets are everywhere--it's easy to lose sight of something.

In the grand scheme, Twitter just isn't that big.

Oh, sure, in terms of sign-ups and monthly web visitors, Twitter is huge. Over 90 million people landed on Twitter.com last month. And the service blew past 500 million global accounts a while ago.

But the little-discussed secret about Twitter is that only a tiny fraction of those who have signed up for accounts on Twitter use it regularly.

And as far as regular usage is concerned, Twitter isn't even close to becoming a mainstream technology.

Don't believe it?

Here's what a recent Pew study found:

About one-in-ten Americans (13%) ever use Twitter or read Twitter messages. By comparison, more than half (54%) ever use other social networking sites, such as Facebook, Google Plus or LinkedIn.

Mainstream technologies and media have 30%-100% penetration, not 10%.

Facebook is a mainstream technology.

Google is a mainstream technology.

Smartphones are a mainstream technology.

Twitter is not a mainstream technology.

What Twitter is is a technology that almost everyone is aware of, thanks to its spectacular marketing and usage by dozens of high-profile celebrities to reach hundreds of millions of fans (here's looking at you, Bieber). But it's also a technology that only a small slice of the population regularly uses.

Now, from the perspective of those who are addicted to Twitter, this is very hard to believe. But the Pew study isn't an isolated freak finding.

For example, most Twitter addicts regard Twitter as the mainstream news medium for the digital age. But this, too, is a warped perception.

Another Pew study, from two years ago, asked Americans "where they got their news yesterday." Only 2% of those surveyed said they got it from Twitter. In this year's study, that percentage had increased only to 3%. Those are tiny numbers, especially for a technology that many people regard as ubiquitous.

Twitter is a great company and a great service, and it has a great mainstream brand.

But the service itself has not yet gone mainstream, at least not in terms of regular usage.

Those who keep arguing (on Twitter) that Twitter will soon vault past Facebook and crush television would do well to remember that.

Mars rover Curiosity finds signs of ancient stream

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on Mars ? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day Mars is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

Khalil s Picks (28 September 2012)

Today, we have the cool edition of Picks. Geology becomes cool thanks to seashells, bacteria reach new cool levels because they control water?s freezing point, a supernova from a thousand years ago did not give birth to any stars (I?ve decided that this is cool), DNA sequencing in schools should make science even cooler. And more cool stuff.

Very cool indeed.

?

Alex Kasprak, in The Sieve, makes geology and a line graph look cooler than Curiosity on Mars. From where I stand, that?s quite something. Alex explains how seashells are actually history books which recount how our planet?s climate changed oh-so-many years ago. I highlighted this piece in my review of Johns Hopkins University?s The Sieve on his blog, but here it is again? top of the pile.

The Revolution Will Be Clumpy

Geologists are able to tell you the exact history of the waxing and waning of glaciers over the past five million years because microscopic creatures in the ocean have been unwittingly recording this dance in their shells. Their shells are made from the carbon and oxygen found in seawater. As glaciers form, seawater is removed from the ocean and trapped on land, resulting in subtle changes in the chemistry of the ocean. These changes are recorded in the shells, which create a detailed history as they pile up on the ocean floor.

Ideal for Reddit?s TIL (Today I Learned) subthread/subreddit, Seeder El-Showk in his blog, Inspiring Science, has a piece about bacteria and water?s freezing point. Better put: how bacteria actually dictate the freezing point of water. Even better put: water?s freezing point is not 0C if it isn?t contaminated.

The bacteria that make it rain

Strange as it may seem, water doesn?t actually freeze at zero degrees. In fact, even at temperatures as cold as -10?C, water still needs help turning into ice. Living creatures of all stripes have learned to take advantage of this curious fact in different ways, though none have done so with quite as much style as bacteria.

Joel Winston, in Wired.co.uk, has a piece about some cool science not being done by scientists. Synthetic biology in the garage type of thing.

Amateur scientists build Lego-style synthetic BioBricks in public lab

While some may believe that science is better left to scientists, hundreds of amateur biologists around the world have been setting-up makeshift biology labs in their homes, garages and community centres. Some of these ?biohackers? or ?DIY biologists? have political motivations to open up science for all, a few attempt to address an absence of research in rare genetic diseases, some are curious and have a desire to learn, while others are taking part just for the sheer fun of it all.

Eric Sawyer, in his Scitable blog, Bio 2.0, says that with technologies becoming more and more affordable?think DNA sequencing?schools and universities should invest in them for undergraduate education. Eric argues that with better technologies, undergrads can do much cooler and interesting lab experiments which should increase interest in science.

Cheaper Genomes Should Enhance Undergraduate Education

Some things in science are just intrinsically expensive. Digging kilometers-long tunnels filled with high vacuum and superconducting magnets will forever be out of the reach of amateur scientists and universities alike. But some technologies start off appearing intrinsically expensive and rapidly cheapen to the point of becoming widely available. The first computers were enormous machines that required a dedicated team of personnel, but now many of us carry one around in our pocket. DNA sequencing must at first have looked like an intrinsically expensive technology, but today it could not be clearer that DNA sequencing is much more like computing than high energy physics. The cost of sequencing a human genome has fallen at a staggering rate over the last decade (just look at the graph). In fact, the rate of innovation in the DNA sequencing community far exceeds Moore?s Law. If DNA sequencing did follow Moore?s Law, with the cost of sequencing a genome being cut in half every 18 months, sequencing a human genome would today still cost millions.

When a star explodes to form a supernova, new stars form from the deathbed. But, as Kelly Oakes explains in her Scientific American blog, Basic Space, a thousand years ago, a supernova ?lived and died fast, leaving no companion star behind.?

Supernova 1006 lived fast and left no companion behind

A supernova that lit up the skies in the year 1006 lived and died fast, leaving no companion star behind, astronomers have found. The result is the latest clue in a puzzle that has been troubling astronomers for some time ? how does this type of stellar explosion happen? Supernova 1006 exploded, as seen from Earth, in the year 1006 (hence the name). It was probably the brightest star ever visible to humans and could have been bright enough to read by at night . Astronomers know that it was a type Ia supernova ? a particular type of stellar sticky end that involves taking another star along for the ride.

Palace to cyberlaw critics: Wait for the IRR

MANILA, Philippines - Malaca?ang appealed to various groups opposing the cybercrime law to wait for the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) but stressed it respects their decision to question it before the Supreme Court.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act, which was published in newspapers last September 18, takes effect 15 days after publication - or on October 9.

?Number one, what is the position of government? The position of government is, look, we already have responsibilities attached to print, TV, and radio, so what the Cybercrime Act does is to also attach responsibilities in cyberspace," Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing on Thursday, September 27.

"You?ve got freedom to report - the freedom of expression is always recognized but freedom of expression is not absolute. We know that for a fact,? Lacierda added.

?And I think, more than anybody else, the journalists are very responsible when it comes to writing articles, they know the parameters. The only concern in cyberspace are the people who are not familiar with being responsible about what they write. And so, if we take away (responsibility), if it?s absolute freedom really?ultimately, you?ll be impinging on other people?s rights,? he said.

Journalists, lawyers and media organizations have said that the law's provisions on libel and state power to shut down websites violate freedom of expression.

President's veto

Asked why the President did not exercise his veto powers on online libel, Lacierda said the recommendation was for approval because before the law was given to him for signing, the Office of the Executive Secretary prepared a legal memorandum for it and it was recommended for signing.

Lacierda said he hopes the IRR would be able to address the concerns of various sectors. "Some people have already resorted to, going to the Supreme Court, that is their right,? Lacierda said.

Among the chief critics of the law is a member of the ruling Liberal Party, Sen Teofisto Guingona III, who filed a petition before the Supreme Court on Thursday asking it to declare some provisions of the law unconstitutional.

Lacierda said this recourse is better than hacking government websites, which happened Wednesday night, September 26 and attacked the sites of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the water administration system, among others.

Lacierda said the new law was discussed during a social summit last weekend sponsored by Rappler, Tweetup Manila and several organizations but ?as in any other law, there are venues if somebody would wish to contest the provisions.?

?However, as it stands right now the law is there, IRR is being drafted, maybe we can talk to those who will draft the IRR. Of course, we also know that the IRR should not be greater than the law itself. The water cannot rise above the source,? Lacierda said.

Be responsible

?If you want to express yourself, we can express ourselves in a decent manner. If you want to criticize, you can criticize without getting to licentious. Those are really just the concerns. There should be responsibilities. Freedom is there, we recognize the freedom to express oneself. But, we should be reminded that the responsibilities which are present already in media, in radio, in TV, should also be present in cyberspace. There should be no fear of expressing oneself, I think, that?s the most important thing,? Lacierda said.

Asked about apprehensions that the government might use this law to go after critics, Lacierda said: ?You don?t have to have cyberspace to do that. We?ve seen that?We have the freedoms expressed in media so, these are not different. If I?m not mistaken, the definition of libel in the Cybercrime Act was lifted from the Revised Penal Code. So, the definition did not change,? Lacierda said.

?The wisdom has been expressed through the Cybercrime Act. These legislators agreed that that particular provision should be included. The position of the President (Aquino) is that there should also be responsibility in cyberspace. Now, as to (amendments)? lawmaking is not our department so, we assume that once it leaves the hands of the legislature, there?s presumption of regularity,? Lacierda said. - Rappler.com

Dish Network launches nationwide satellite broadband service with ViaSat, Hughes, calls it dishNET

Dish Network's nationwide satellite brodband service could be ready to launch soon

Dish Network's long-gestating tie-up with ViaSat and Hughes has finally arrived under the name dishNET. Sounding like an implement you'd use to clean dirty dinner plates, the nationwide satellite broadband service launches from October 1st, targeting customers in rural areas that are underserved with fixed line gear. $40 a month gets you 5 Mbps down / 1Mbps up with a 10GB data cap, while subscribers can get a $10 discount if they pick up a TV package at the same time. We asked the company if this was related to the service based upon its spectrum purchases that was hinted at back in August, and it confirmed this is just leveraging ViaSat Exede and HughesNet.

Start A Craft Day | (in)courage

One of the ways I?ve gotten to know new people in my town is through craft day.? I?d love to take the credit for it but, my talented friends Reeve and Angela are the brains behind it, I?m just the one who is too lazy to leave the house so I?ve been the host. So really?? They?ve done all the hard work. And if you ask them, they probably don?t even think it?s hard.

Here?s why we started a craft day:

1. we love to do little crafts

2. we wanted to be together

3. we each had some crafty friends and thought it would be fun to introduce them all

It was Reeve?s idea to invite me and Angela to join in a Crafty Day Pinterest board.?? This was SO SMART because we could easily pin potential craft day ideas and then when it was time to decide which ideas we actually wanted to consider, we could all pick our top two or three ideas from the craft board and talk about what would work for a group.? Sometimes we met for coffee and made a decision, sometimes we just emailed.

Here?s how craft day works:

There are three of us who plan it and we each have a job that we like:

Reeve sent out the emails (OK, so she went all out and made invitations because she?s awesome, but you don?t have to do fancy invites) email is fine?just have someone in charge of that part who is organized.

Angela usually taught the craft.? She?s really good at explaining things so it worked out well.

I usually hosted and bought the supplies because I like to stay home but when I am out, I?m usually at craft store.? Sometimes we would all go together to get supplies if we had time, that part was really fun too.

Last winter and fall we had craft day once a month (it works best to have it on the same day?like the 3rd Monday or something) and a few weeks before craft day the three of us would decide on the craft and Reeve sent out the invites.? We?d get a rough count of how many would be there (usually 6-8) but an exact number didn?t matter (like when we did the doily bowls, we had some extra doilies just in case).

I?d buy whatever supplies we needed (usually it was pretty cheap) and fix some food because food fixin? is one of my spiritual gifts and I like doing that.? We?d keep a jar out for anyone who came who could to put $5 in for the supplies.? We didn?t keep track or anything and it always worked out fine.

Angela would explain the craft and demonstrate and we?d all talk and laugh and eat and hot glue off our fingerprints.

It was a great excuse to get together and it?s so nice to have something to keep your hands busy while you are meeting new people.? Crafts are a great ice breaker and such a low commitment?you could just have a one time craft day for your neighborhood if you want to meet some new people.?? Or maybe you and two friends just want to have a great excuse to get together, you don?t have to invite a bunch of people you don?t know.

I wrote about three of our craft days, check them out for more photos and ideas:

Broker owes client accounting for property management services ...

A Hawaii federal court has considered whether a real estate professional?s management of her client?s rental property purportedly ?as a friend? subjected her to the legal duties that a property manager owes to his/her client.

Inmi Fegenbush (?Broker?) represented Richard and Sally Giomi as well as members of their family (collectively, the ?Clients?) in various real estate transactions. Following some of these transactions, the Broker began assisting the Clients in the leasing of the properties. The Broker found tenants, collected the rent, arranged for maintenance of the properties, and made the mortgage payments for these properties. The parties did not enter into a formal property management agreement. Read More (realtor.org login required).

How Some Colleges Are Improving Black Graduation Rates

While college-degree attainment for black students remains persistently low, some colleges and universities are implementing programs that are helping boost graduation rates, a new study shows.

About half of the public and private schools between 2004 and 2010 either improved their graduation rates or closed the attainment gaps for black students by an average of 8 percentage points.

(RELATED Interactive Chart: Institutions in the African-American Gainer Sample)

The top-gainer universities boosted graduation rates without reducing black college enrollment, according to the report ??Advancing to Completion: Increasing Degree Attainment by Improving Graduation Rates and Closing the Gaps for African-American Students.?

The modest gains, the authors of the report argue, show that universities can reverse the trend of low academic completion regardless of their starting point.

?Our nation will be well-served if more colleges and universities validate and replicated the equity-minded policies of those institutions that are getting it done,? according to the report.

Here are some key programs and initiatives from schools that have closed the graduation gaps or have made gains in boosting degree-completion rates:

  • San Jose State University and California State Long Beach, among the top 25 schools that improved graduation rates for minority students, implemented programs, such as the Graduation Initiative and the African American Initiative, to boost graduation rates and cut the completion gap in half for minority students.
  • ?The State University at Albany in New York holds regular meetings between academic and student-affairs staff to identity early those students at risk of dropping out.
  • Students at Virginia Commonwealth University follow a cohort curriculum in which the cohort take the same classes with the same professor, and get specialized support services. The university has special programs, such as mentoring programs for black students in science, technology, engineering, and math areas. Joseph Marolla, vice provost for instruction and student success, told the study?s authors that small classes and cohort learning has reduced the proportion of students who fail, drop out, or withdraw from courses.
  • At the start of each semester school officials at the University of Southern California seek out the students who are not yet registered for the upcoming semester, and pairs students with the services they need to register. The private school, which has closed the graduation gap between whites and minority students, created a database where academic advisers from various majors and minors could access the academic record of each student as well as his or her four-year plan, which is audited periodically.?

Still, the national graduation rates for black students remain worrisome. Black college completion rates were either stagnant or dipped slightly during the six-year period.? For instance, 40.6 percent of blacks in 2010 completed an undergraduate degree within six years, compared with 41.2 percent in 2004.

The top private universities with increases in graduation rates, between 2004-2010:

? ? 1. Northwood University (Texas): up 24.7 percentage points, to 40 percent.

? ? 2. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York: up 23.7 percentage points, to 87 percent.

? ? 3. Tiffin University, Ohio: up 22.0 percentage points, to 34.8 percent.

? ? 4. Andrews University, Michigan: up 22.1 percentage points, to 65 percent.

? ? 5. University of the Arts, Pennsylvania: up 21.8 percentage points, to 64.7 percent.

The top public universities that saw graduation rates increase:

  1. California University of Pennsylvania: up 33 percentage points, to 60.5 percent.
  2. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona: up 29.6 percent, to 53.9 percent.
  3. Towson University: up 22.8 percent, to 74 percent.
  4. Appalachian State University: up 22.1 percent points, to 64.6 percent.
  5. University of North Carolina-Wilmington: up 21.4 percent, to 61.4 percent.

?

Top eight private and public universities that have closed the graduation gap:

  1. Andrews University
  2. Pepperdine University
  3. Harvard University
  4. University of Miami
  5. SUNY College at Old Westbury
  6. Stony Brook University
  7. University of California (Riverside)
  8. Radford University

Sony Xperia T review: a new 4.6-inch smartphone flagship that isn't quite new enough

Sony Xperia T review The new smartphone flagship that isn't quite new enough

Sony's Xperia T goes by a few names. Depending on which country you're in, you might pick it up as the Xperia GX, or possibly even the TX. The final review sample that's been passed our desk, however, is the Xperia T, the European HSPA version, headed to O2's UK stores in the coming weeks, at which point it will be free on £36 per-month contracts and likely replace the Xperia S as Sony's Android flagship. In comparison to Sony's Spring smartphone, there's a similar 720p display, now stretched out to 4.6 inches, a different 13-megapixel camera, a new 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and Android ICS -- with the promise of Jelly Bean soon after it hits store. The Xperia T also revives a familiar hardware curve and has picked up onscreen Android buttons on its design journey. Design twists and promises of the latest OS aside, has Sony finally built a top-tier phone capable of going toe-to-toe with the smartphone heavyweights? Have a look after the break.

How The Parenting Techniques Of Today Could Have Impacted My ...

Growing up I lived with a family where it was myself and two younger brothers being raised by an absent father and a devoted mother. While our father had little effect in our life away from economical support, my mother dedicated her whole life towards taking care of her children and making sure we had a healthy youth. She did not have the benefit of advanced parenting methods because we grew up in a time where parents were just simply expected to raise their kids on blind luck rather than through the expertise of psychology. My youngest brother and I could easily be described as healthy and happy children, usually appreciating exactly what was given to us and enjoying life most often. Granted there were times of revolution or disobedience but these phases were very short and few between. Seeing the way my brother and I were, a lot of people would hope for the same behavior out of my other brother, while this could not be further from the reality.

While you looked at my family my younger brother will easily fall under the group of aggressive kids. My mother often tells the tale of him rising up as a happy kid just like the rest of us until one day he took my grandfather?s spectacles, snapped them in half, and then laughed about the situation rather than feel regretful.

This began a very long pattern of disobedience and defiance that can even be found in his adult patterns. It is significant to identify that there was no variation in love given and no difference of attention, he just simply behaved in a different way in the most depressing manner possible.

When I was twelve my dad passed away and my mother was forced to begin working which only seemed to worsen the situation. Now free of supervision my brother immediately became attached to harmful influences like smoking, drugs and alcohol, frequently struggling with my mother and eventually bring confusion to our household. It is vital to point out that even with our house in disarray both my youngest brother and I had no variation in individuality and continued to appreciate all our mother had ever done for us. In hindsight I begin to wonder the way things could have been different if my mother had access to the amazing parenting methods that are available to parents today.

I am now a father and have opted to take benefit of the parenting techniques that were not available to my mother in order to help in raising my kids. I have read a variety of unique techniques and have seen that one of the most efficient possibilities seen were developed by Laura Fobler. Through her methods I have found immense insight into the minds of kids. I learned so much about my kids, because I am now capable to be familiar with why my children behave the way they do. Also, I now know how to prevent many conflicts and on top of that, the quality of the relationship between my child and I, improves by the day! Learning about the methods Laura Fobler mentions, I have developed a new method when it comes to raising my children. And we all shall not be happier! If my mother had the opportunity to use these techniques, I am sure my brother?s life would have been completely different. Unluckily, I can't turn back the clock.

U.S. outlines corruption case against ex-Detroit mayor

DETROIT (Reuters) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick ran a criminal enterprise out of his office to enrich himself and family and friends, U.S. prosecutors said on Friday at the opening of Kilpatrick's public corruption trial.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Chutkow told jurors the prosecution case would rely on testimony from former Kilpatrick associates and text messages to and from the former mayor in what is expected to be a four-month trial.

Kilpatrick's attorney, James Thomas, denied the charges and countered that his client was a faithful public servant who had encountered fierce opposition from political foes.

If convicted Kilpatrick faces up to 30 years in prison for stealing millions from one of the poorest cities in the United States.

Kilpatrick and co-defendant Bobby Ferguson exchanged text messages such as, "?Let's get us some money,' ?No deal without me,' ?It's my time to get paid'," Chutkow told jurors.

The former mayor and two other co-defendants face a combined 46 counts including racketeering, extortion, bribery and income tax evasion.

Kilpatrick, now 42, was a rising political star in the Democratic Party when he was elected the youngest mayor in Detroit history in 2001. He resigned as part of a plea deal in a separate perjury case in 2008.

Kilpatrick pocketed kickbacks, bought $60,000 worth of custom-made suits, and paid off credit cards with $280,000 in cash, Chutkow said.

Ferguson, a construction company owner and long-time Kilpatrick friend, helped the ex-mayor rig $60 million in city contracts, Chutkow charged. Ferguson's competitors for city contract work often called him "the king," Chutkow said.

Thomas, the defense attorney, said the "snippets" of information in text messages fail to tell the whole story of Kilpatrick's personal or professional relationships with his co-defendants.

"Politics is like making sausage: It's not pretty and it's messy, but, once it's cooked, it tastes pretty good," Thomas told the jury in his 20-minute opening statement.

"We're here to tell you that he did not take any bribes, he did not extort anyone," Thomas added.

Prosecutors can call on more than 200 witnesses and rely on 600,000 text messages exchanged on city-issued devices.

Kilpatrick, who is black, and his attorneys earlier this year tried to have the charges dropped because they claimed blacks were systematically excluded from federal grand jury pools in southeastern Michigan.

Among the dozen jurors, six are white, five are black and one is Hispanic. There are six alternate jurors.

Two other co-defendants that prosecutors say were involved in some of the schemes are Kilpatrick's father, Bernard Kilpatrick, and former head of the city's water department, Victor Mercado.

Testimony was scheduled to begin on Monday.

MIND Reviews: Fooling Houdini

Fooling Houdini, Alex Stone Image: HarperCollins

Fooling Houdini: Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks, and the Hidden Powers of the Mind
Alex Stone
HarperCollins, 2012 ($26.99)

A magician's psychological subterfuge requires years to master, as Stone writes in Fooling Houdini, a foray into the underbelly of the magic culture.

As an aspiring magician, Stone quickly realizes he needs to do more than practice tricks. He has to penetrate this unique subculture, in which apprentices seek out masters to hone their performance and learn codes of conduct. Magicians once relied on a vow of secrecy: never tell the audience how you performed a trick. This discretion was born in part of magic's seedy roots in a time when a card cheat could wipe out the house and the slightest slipup might lead to a severe beating or worse.

Magic is much safer today, and secrets are no longer so closely guarded. The celebrity illusionist duo Penn and Teller discovered, for example, that even when they explained a trick to an audience, people were still fooled?and all the more impressed at the feat.

As magic grew more sophisticated, practitioners turned to behavioral science and mathematics for fresh ideas on how to exploit our perceptions. For example, in Daniel Simons's famous ?invisible gorilla? experiment, subjects were asked to watch a video of people passing a basketball and tally the number of passes that occurred. Subjects who counted correctly tended to completely miss the appearance of a person in a gorilla suit. Called inattentional blindness, this phenomenon enables many illusory feats.

Stone discovers that as magicians perfect their trade, fewer tricks catch them off guard; however, he finds that even the experts can be deceived. Everyone, especially magicians, yearns for the thrill of being fooled.

Using vibrant, clear examples, Stone reveals that magic is not just shakedowns and con games. Rather the art of deception allows us to peek into our subconscious and understand the mathematical and psychological gears that make it turn.

Yogurt consumption, blood pressure, and incident hypertension

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Adding more yogurt to your diet without increasing the number of calories you eat may help lower your risk of high blood pressure, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association's High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions.

A recent study found long-term yogurt-eaters were less likely to develop high blood pressure and on average had lower systolic blood pressure than those who didn't eat yogurt. Systolic blood pressure is the top number in a blood pressure reading. It measures the force of blood against the walls of your arteries when your heart is beating.

During the 15 year study, researchers followed more than 2,000 volunteers who did not have high blood pressure at the start of the study. Yogurt consumption was measured by questionnaires filled out by the volunteers at three intervals over the study period. Study participants were 31 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure if at least 2 percent of their daily calories came from yogurt, which would be like eating at least one six-ounce cup of low-fat yogurt every three days. In addition, their systolic blood pressure increased less than that of people who didn't eat yogurt.

The study was funded by the Framingham Heart Study of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health and by a research grant from the Dannon Company, Inc.
