(AP) ? Manchester City defeated Aston Villa 4-1 on Saturday and overtook rival Manchester United at the top of the Premier League after the defending champions were held to a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

Mario Balotelli scored in the first half before Adam Johnson, Vincent Kompany and James Milner added goals after the break. City improved to 22 points, two more than United.

Balotelli scored on an overhead bicycle kick, the fourth straight game in which the Italian striker had a goal. Shane Warnock had the lone goal for Villa.

The capacity 45,065 crowd at Anfield included LeBron James. The Miami Heat star watched Liverpool play live for the first time since becoming a minority owner of the club.

Substitute Javier Hernandez scored on a header in the 81st minute, allowing Man United to escape with a draw and maintain its unbeaten start.

United manager Alex Ferguson did not start Wayne Rooney, who was "devastated" by a three-match Euro 2012 ban for kicking an opponent. Steven Gerrard ? making his first start in seven months ? scored off a free kick in the 68th minute before Rooney and Nani came off the bench to spur United.

"I didn't think they were really threatening until they scored the goal," Ferguson said. "But then the game opened up and we took the chance."

Liverpool has 14 points in fifth while Stoke improved to 12 points after a 2-0 win over Fulham. Villa's first defeat of the season saw it stay on 11 points, same as Norwich after its 3-1 victory over Swansea.
