What happened to the gender gap?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? What gender gap?

Less than two weeks out from Election Day, Republican Mitt Romney has erased President Barack Obama's 16-point advantage among women, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows. And the president, in turn, has largely eliminated Romney's edge among men.

Those churning gender dynamics leave the presidential race still a virtual dead heat, with Romney favored by 47 percent of likely voters and Obama by 45 percent, a result within the poll's margin of sampling error, the survey shows.

After a commanding first debate performance and a generally good month, Romney has gained ground with Americans on a number of important fronts, including their confidence in how he would handle the economy and their impressions of his ability to understand their problems.

At the same time, expectations that Obama will be re-elected have slipped: Half of voters now expect the president to win a second term, down from 55 percent a month earlier.

For all of the good news for Republicans, however, what matters most in the election endgame is Romney's standing in the handful of states whose electoral votes still are up for grabs. And polls in a number of those battleground states still appear to favor Obama.

As the election nears, Romney has been playing down social issues and trying to project a more moderate stance on matters such as abortion in an effort to court female voters. The AP-GfK poll, taken Friday through Tuesday, shows Romney pulling even with Obama among women at 47-47 after lagging by 16 points a month earlier.

But now his campaign is grappling with the fallout from a comment by a Romney-endorsed Senate candidate in Indiana, who said that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended."

Romney quickly distanced himself from the remark by Republican Richard Mourdock. But Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the incident was "a reminder that a Republican Congress working with a Republican President Mitt Romney would feel that women should not be able to make choices about their own health care."

A renewed focus on social issues would be an unwelcome development for Romney: Among female likely voters, 55 percent say Obama would make the right decisions on women's issues, compared with 41 percent who think Romney would.

Romney's pitch to women has been focused squarely on the economy, making the case that what women want most is to ensure their families and their country are on a solid financial footing. The poll shows that message appears to be taking root.

A month ago, women favored Obama over Romney on the economy 56 percent to 40 percent. Now, the split has shifted to 49 percent for Romney and 45 percent for Obama.

Similarly, Obama's lead among women as the candidate who better understands the people's problems has narrowed considerably, from a 58-36 Obama advantage last month to a 50-43 Obama edge now.

Monica Jensen, a 55-year-old independent from Mobile, Ala., says she voted for Obama in 2008 but will shift her vote to Romney this time, largely because of the economy.

"I'm ready for a change," she said. "I want to see the economy go in a different direction."

Ginny Lewis, a Democrat and 72-year-old retired district attorney from Princeton, Ky., says she'll vote for Romney because "I'm tired of the Republicans blaming all the debt on Democrats, so let them take over and see what they do."

Not that she's optimistic about how that will turn out, though. "I think things will get worse before they get better," she said.

Lindsey Hornbaker, a 25-year-old graduate student and nanny, hasn't been swayed by Romney's charm offensive.

Hornbaker, interviewed Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, where she was attending an Obama rally, said Romney can tweak his tone but not what she sees as a record focused far more on top income earners and out of touch with most working families.

"I heard him go out of his way to sound so moderate during the debate," she said. "And I thought: 'Who is this? Where did this come from?' He may sound like he's focused on the middle class. But where's the record?"

Obama, meanwhile, has been working to shore up his support among men, who tend to be more Republican than women. In the 2008 election, men broke 49 percent for Obama to 48 percent for John McCain, even though Obama got 53 percent of the vote overall. The president's job approval ratings among men have tended to fall below his ratings among women throughout his first term.

A month ago, Romney's advantage among men was 13 percentage points. Now, it's down to 5 points, with most of the shift toward Obama coming among unmarried men.

Obama's election chances hinge on turning out voters like Jon Gerton, a disabled construction worker from Jonesboro, Ark. Gerton's a staunch Obama supporter ? but he didn't vote in 2008.

"It takes longer than four years to get things to the point where things are going better," Gerton said. "Four years, it's not very long."

There has been a gender gap in every presidential election since 1980. In 2008, women were 7 percentage points more likely than men to vote for Obama.

Overall, people are significantly more optimistic about the economy and unemployment in the coming year than they have been at any point in AP-GfK polling going back to March 2011, when the poll first started asking those questions. And likely voters are even more optimistic than other adults.

Nearly six in 10 likely voters think the economy will improve in the next year, up from 46 percent last month. And 42 percent think the number of unemployed Americans will drop in the next year, up from 32 percent in September.

Count Chrysta Walker, of Cedar Lake, Ind., among the voters who are sticking with Obama because they think he's got the right solutions for the fragile economy.

"He's got the middle class at heart," says the 58-year-old Walker. On the economy, she says, Obama "did as well as could be expected because he didn't get a lot of cooperation."

David Bierwirth, who owns an autograph sales business in Las Vegas, turned out at a Romney rally in Henderson this week to show his support for the GOP nominee. To Bierwirth, his vote for Romney is all about the economy.

"I want people back to work," he says, "because then they will buy my products."

The Associated Press-GfK poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

Wi-Fi in a Nutshell
Wi-Fi wireless technology is 1 of the greatest technological advancements since the Internet. It offers mobility to computer systems and it is used in the office, at house and in community locations. A Wi-Fi enabled gadget such as a computer or intelligent phone can connect to the Internet when it is inside variety of a wireless network that is connected to the Web. There are two versions of WEP, the more powerful 128-bit and the older and weaker 40-little bit. The 128-bit edition might be more powerful but not all wireless devices on the community might support it. Even though WEP is not ideal and may be defeated with sophisticated software program, it can prevent unauthorised entrance doorway entry.

two. Choose a Strong WEP Password

Simply put, a weak password can effortlessly compromise WEP security. Its easy to select a powerful WEP password. All you have to do it stay away from utilizing sequences or repeated figures, personal information such as birthdays and telephone numbers as nicely as dictionary words in any language. 6. Use Virtual Private Community (VPN)

VPNs form a personal network that utilizes a public community to link remote website customers to 1 an additional. VPNs offer security as they use authenticated links to ensure that only authorised users can link to a community. In addition, they use encryption to make certain that other people can?t intercept and use the data that travels over the Web.

seven. Set up Anti-virus Software

For presidential candidates, image may trump debate issues, experts say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? The wide swings in debate performances by this year's presidential candidates reflect the fact that in modern campaigns, a candidate's image is the message, according to linguistic anthropologists who have studied presidential campaigns.

Candidates send important messages to voters through even their smallest gestures, the researchers say. For example, in this year's first debate, President Barack Obama often looked down at the podium and was criticized for appearing disengaged. In subsequent debates Obama directly addressed his Republican opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and increased the use of a hammering hand gesture sometimes called the "power grip."

Michael Lempert and Michael Silverstein explore the surprisingly important role of such personal touches in Creatures of Politics: Media, Message and the American Presidency, just published by the Indiana University Press. They conclude that U.S. presidential campaigns are all about a candidate's brand and celebrity, more than issues brought up at a debate.

"The message is an all-encompassing collage of impressions, including the image politicians project with their personal style and language and the visual images they use to communicate their approachability with the electorate. It's a form of branding," said Michael Silverstein, the Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor in Anthropology, Linguistics and Psychology at the University of Chicago.

Candidates take their cues from celebrities who strategically construct and project images to appeal to the public and advance their careers. "In the way of contributing to the message, celebrity becomes a great asset in the realm of political life," Silverstein said.

Former President George W. Bush, famous for his trouble with language, could be perceived to have done well in the 2004 presidential debate with John Kerry, the researchers say. Bush used the way he spoke, rather than what he said, to create an image that attracted voters.

"Kerry was, ironically, viewed as being the more patrician, based on his grammar and elocution," Silverstein said. "And so he seemed like somebody who wasn't real. When you look at Bush's bloopers, they weren't really bloopers at all. They were deliberate efforts to seem real, like a regular person with whom the majority of the audience could identify."

Lempert and Silverstein see the public fascination with this "message" as a variation of the predatory voyeurism that characterizes our culture's obsession with celebrities. "It's really the 'TMZ-ization' of politics," said Lempert, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan. "We've become habituated to this. Basically, we've come to rely on the characterizations of candidates that this system has invented to help us make sense of which candidates we should support."

"As a society, we know that this is happening, and that it's now the norm," Silverstein said. "But we still feel a certain sense of discomfort that marketing techniques that used to be applied only to commodities are now taken for granted in the packaging of presidential contenders."

This discomfort is expressed by our calling for rational discussion of the issues and by commentators' questions about whether the candidates that we're seeing are "real" or "authentic," the researchers say.

"Electoral politics has always involved presenting a publicly imaginable character to the electorate," Lempert said. "But today's communications technologies and the rise of professional consultancy and political marketing have amplified the illusion to be real, or to be seen as being real.

"So we not only have debates, but endless debates about the debates. Rather than just being a chance to talk about the issues, the debates are also a form of theater that allows viewers to take the measure of the candidates, through their appearance, their pronunciation, their use of gestures, even their gaffes."

James Franco to Receive Special Prize at Rome's CinemaXXI Sidebar

ROME ? The International Rome Film Festival announced the full lineup for its CinemaXXI sidebar Tuesday, highlighted by A Walk in the Park from ?No Wave? cult director Amos Poe, Michael Wahrmann?s Avanti Popolo, Peter Greenway?s Goltzius and the Pelican Company and Steekspel (Tricked) from Paul Verhoeven.

Newly installed artistic director Marco Mueller also announced that actor and director James Franco, who is connected to two films in the CinemaXXI lineup, will receive a special prize in Rome. And for the first time, organizers screened in public the short trailer that will precede the screenings of all the films in the festival?s official selection, feature an artistic old-style of a nude woman preparing to shoot an arrow.

VIDEO: James Franco's Duet With Smokey Robinson, 'Crime,' Gets a Sexy, Trippy Visual

CinemaXXI, the newest incarnation of the sidebar previously known as Extra, focuses on new trends in cinema. Mario Sesti, who directed Extra until last year, has stayed on as one of the programmers for CinemaXXI, making him one of the most high-profile holdovers from the pre-Mueller era at the seven-year-old festival.

With the collection of feature-length, short and medium films and documentaries announced, the only announcements yet to be made for the lineup of the Nov. 9-17 event are the two surprise productions that will screen in competition.

The five-person jury headed by Scottish artist and filmmaker Douglas Gordon will award three prizes: a Best Film honor and Jury Prize for feature-length productions, and a separate award for short- and medium-length films.

The lineup features an eclectic mix of productions, with several directed by multiple directors, including: opening film Centro Hist?rico (Historic Center), an homage to the Portuguese city of Guimar?es from Finland?s Aki Kaurism?ki, 103-year-old Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, and Cannes regulars Victor Erice and Pedro Costa; Mondo Invisivel (Invisible World) directed by a dozen directors including Wim Wenders, Marco Bechis and de Oliviera again; and Tar, directed by a dozen more directors working under the ?supervision? of Franco, who stars in the production along with Mila Kunis.

Franco, who also directed a one-minute short-short called Dreams that will screen in the sidebar, will be awarded the new Cubovision prize. His presence will add to the festival?s red-carpet star power, which has been criticized by the local media.

With the two CinemaXXI screenings, Franco is becoming a regular in Italy: he also starred in Harmony Korine?s crime comedy Spring Breakers and had a cameo role in Ariel Vromen?s thriller The Iceman, both of which were well received at the Venice Film Festival in September.

Other films worth keeping tabs on in the lineup include: Tanti Futuri Possibili Con Renato Nicolini (Many Possible Futures With Renato Nicolini) from Gianfranco Rosi; Gegenwart (Consequence) from Germany?s Thomas Heise (the film?stars F. Murray Abraham); Suspension of Disbelief from U.K. director Mike Figgis; and Jianshi Liu Baiyuan (Judge Archer) from Chinese director Xu Haofeng.

Poe?s A Walk in the Park, which calls itself ?a psychedelic journey back into the womb,? is the opening film of the main competition, in contrast to Centro Hist?rico, which is the CinemaXXI opening film and screening out of competition.

Most of the films in CinemaXXI will screen at the Maxxi Museum of contemporary art, a short walk from the festival?s headquarters at Auditorium Parco della Musica, though Mueller said a few will screen at Parco della Musica as well. All the feature-length films in the competition are world premieres.

The full-length films screening in CinemaXXI in competition are:

A WALK IN THE PARK from Amos Poe, United States

AVANTI POPOLO ?from Michael Wahrmann, Brazil, 2012

BLOODY DAUGHTER from St?phanie Argerich, France and Switzerland

GEGENWART (CONSEQUENCE) from Thomas Heise, Germany

GOLTZIUS AND THE PELICAN COMPANY ?from Peter Greenaway, The Netherlands

Harness the Power of the Communication Age | Business 2 ...

The Communication Age is here, and it?s time we harness it. Why? Because informing is a one-way conversation between you and your employees, customers, or other stakeholders. And let?s face it?you can send somebody a new policy, a new training manual, a new brochure, or even an email and not know if it had any impact. Did they read it? Did they act on it? Did they embrace it? You don?t know.

Communicating, on the other hand, is two-way and dynamic. It?s a dialogue?a conversation?a meaningful connection that prompts action. Communicating allows you to move ahead in a positive direction faster.

But before going any further, let me say that this doesn?t mean we never want to inform again?that we want to dismantle the Information Age. There still is a need to simply inform. Think of it this way: Every age that has ever existed still exists today. There are places on the planet where people are still hunters and gatherers, and in other places there are people living in an early form of the industrial age. The same is true when it comes to our tools. We don?t get rid of the past. Rather, as new things come along, we integrate the old into the new. For example, right now we still have mainframe computers, desktop computers, and laptops, even though we are increasingly finding that our main computer is our tablet and our smart phone.

So the old doesn?t go away; we just use it in a new way. For example, mainframes are now being used to help create a big-data backbone and connect to users through a secure private cloud. That?s why we don?t want to get rid of the Information Age, but rather we want to embrace the power of the Communication Age.

What are some Communication Age tools we all need to take notice of? Two in particular are visual communications and unified communication.

Visual communications are different from video conferencing. Video conferencing requires a large room filled with expensive equipment, and the room is always booked by the executives. Visual communication is something like Skype?something you can use not just on a laptop, but also on a desktop, tablet, or smart phone today.

Visual communications are powerful. I can see what you are thinking while I communicate with you because I can hear?and?see you. Based on your reactions, movements, mannerisms, and expressions, I can get a better feel for what you?re thinking and can adjust my communications with you. I can see whether you?re bored, focused, or confused. Because of this, I can keep myself more relevant and get a higher level of communication with you.

It?s also important to realize that we don?t all learn best in the same way. For example, some of us are auditory learners, meaning we learn best when we listen to a book than read it. In this case you would most likely be better at dictation and voice mail than writing and email.

Unified communications is a tool that can help us communicate in the style we are best at and therefore communicate better. For example, with unified communication I can send you a document in writing, and you can choose whether you want to read it or listen to it based on how you learn and process information best. And chances are that you?ll respond more quickly in the way you prefer to respond, whether in writing or via voice.

Even though unified communications has been around for a while, it has not been widely used. But thanks to increasing processing power, storage, and bandwidth, it has had some major breakthroughs recently, and this will increase its use. For example, some of us are using our new smart ?phones to have our text messages read to us, and we are responding by voice. Even though this is just one simple example, it is still very powerful.

Visual communication tools and unified communications represent only a few of the many new tools we have to foster better communications because we?re giving people options of how to communicate with us. By allowing people to choose the medium they want to send their communication in, the medium of choice to receive it in, and the addition of the visual element, you can create better real-time communication as you would have in a phone call, or you can create a time-shifted dialogue that is far more effective than the traditional means that we?ve been using for years.

So if you?re one of the 95% of companies firmly rooted in the Information Age, it?s time to start the shift to being a Communication Age organization. Don?t wait. Do it now.

Irvine Unified superintendent, president solicit cash

IRVINE -- Irvine Unified School District's superintendent and education board president made a joint plea to parents and others in the district community for a $365 donation to Irvine Public Schools Foundation by Dec. 31.

The city will match donations dollar for dollar up to $1 million because of a ballot measure passed a few years ago.

"If you've ever considered making a contribution to preserve excellence in the classroom, or even to help maintain the property values that are linked to our schools' performance, now is the time," said Superintendent of Schools Terry Walker and School Board President Michael Parham in a mass email.

"As you're probably aware, California's fiscal crisis has forced the (district) to make nearly $40 million worth of reductions in recent years, and uncertainties continue to mount at the state level," the email states.

"Though any amount is appreciated, IPSF and IUSD are asking you to consider a tax-deductible contribution of $365 -- or $1 per day -- by the end of the calendar year. We know this is a lot to ask, particularly during these challenging economic times. But this revenue will make an immediate impact in our classrooms."

In elementary schools, the funds raised will pay for qualified instructional assistants to increase the amount of one-to-one interaction in elementary schools, officials said.

In middle and high schools, the funds will provide additional staffing hours to reduce class sizes in subjects chosen by each principal, officials said.

About $500,000 has already been raised this year, and officials are aiming to raise the entire $1 million in match-eligible funds, foundation spokeswoman Steffanie Early said.

The city's program matches up to $1 million, but only $875,000 will be given to Irvine Unified School District; some of the funds are set aside for Tustin Unified School District, which serves some Irvine students.

In other fundraising news, the foundation's annual gala on Saturday is sold out with 400 people attending. The event is expected to raise $300,000 for the foundation's work as well as a more modest amount of funds that are eligible to be matched by the city, Early said.

Mitt could win the popular vote -- and still lose

For Democrats still stinging from the 2000 election?that is to say, any Democrat born before about 1985?2012 could be the year of retribution. There is a distinct possibility that former Gov. Mitt Romney could win the popular vote and still lose the election to President Barack Obama.

In roughly 45 clinical trials, American democracy has produced four presidents who did not win the popular vote: John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, Benjamin Harrison in 1888 and George W. Bush in 2000. (There have been 56 presidential elections, but popular vote data doesn't exist for the first 10 or so.) The Food and Drug Administration would soundly reject a drug that caused some horrible disfigurement upward of 10 percent of the time, but Americans appear to tolerate a constitution that rewards the overall loser this often. Consensus on the subject is difficult to build. Even though a majority of Americans support abolishing the Electoral College, the present system only punishes one side or the other in a given year.

National polls swung dramatically in Romney's direction after he trounced Obama in the first debate. The odds that Obama will secure re-election under the Signal's model dipped in tandem, but never below about 60 percent. The reason is so familiar that the O, H, and I keys on my keyboards are wearing thin.

Sources: Betfair, Intrade, IEM, HuffPost Pollster and RealClearPolitics

To be clear, we don't necessarily think Romney will win the popular vote. Standing in national polls does not predict actual vote share, and those polls are swinging back in the president's favor. Romney's odds of winning a majority of the ballots, however, are higher than his odds of winning at least 270 electoral votes. This year, the Electoral College unfairly favors Obama: Romney must carry Florida, Virginia and Ohio, while Obama needs only one of them.

The latest Gallup tracking poll of likely national voters has Romney up by 7 points. A lot of virtual ink has been spilled on how and why Gallup's poll has become an outlier: I suggest Alan Abramowitz, Mark Blumenthal or Nate Silver on the subject.?The more meaningful aggregations of polls at?Pollster and RealClearPolitics both report a statistical tie between Obama and Romney in the national polls.

Of the three states Romney needs to win, Florida (80.0 percent likely for Romney) and Virginia (61.9 percent likely for Romney) are leaning in his favor. Ohio has stubbornly remained in Obama's camp, with a 65.0 percent chance of going to Democrats. Obama held firm in the state after his Oct. 3 debate debacle, Ohio's economy is doing relatively well, and early voting is already under way, minimizing the impact of late-breaking events.

Let the pundits tie themselves into knots over the latest Gallup poll. As usual, what America wants is immaterial compared to the desires of the Buckeye State.

Isis' NFC payments go live in Austin and Salt Lake City: 3 carriers, 9 phones, 1 long way to go (video)

Isis' NFC mobile payments go live in Austin and Salt Lake City 3 carriers, 9 devices, 1 long way to go

To say that the launch of Isis has felt drawn out would be a mild understatement. The alliance first signaled its intentions two years ago, detailed its first markets one year ago and faced a last-minute delay. All the ducks are finally in a row, however, and residents of both Austin as well as Salt Lake City can tap to pay (or score discounts) at the "hundreds" of locations that accept NFC-based purchases through American Express, Capital One, Chase and Isis' own cash card. Launch day brings app- and SIM-enabled access for nine devices spread rather unevenly across AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon: only the Droid Incredible 4G LTE is confirmed working for Verizon subscribers, while the rest are divided more equally between multiple Samsung Galaxies and HTC devices like the Amaze 4G and One X. Over 20 phones should be Isis-aware before the end of the year. It's a potentially strong start to one of the few truly cross-network mobile payment systems in the US, but we see a long road ahead before Isis gives Google Wallet some jitters -- there's legions of banks, cities and stores needed before Isis is widespread, and we're not counting on that ever-elusive universal hardware support.

Can We Carve Up A Restrictive Covenant? | Bankrate.com

Steve McLindenDear Real Estate Adviser,
Our restrictive covenant states that our land may be subdivided once. Can we section off the middle to create three parcels and still honor the covenant?
-- G. Gundlach

Dear G.,
Possibly. Where there's ambiguity, there's opportunity. And it sounds as though you have a better chance than most to override this little dictum on your deed, which is more commonly referred to as a restrictive covenant.

A restrictive covenant typically imposes a binding set of rules that goes beyond zoning restrictions. The restrictive covenant applies to all homes in a specific neighborhood and to all subsequent owners. Many times, such covenants are placed on the deeds of properties by builders when a subdivision is developed, ostensibly to enhance property values by limiting development and preserving the neighborhood's character.

Aside from preventing properties from being divided, restrictive covenants can dictate the distance a home is set back from the street, outlaw any commercial uses or any additions to the property, limit the kinds of improvements you can make (such as a toolshed or tennis court), and restrict the types of animals you can keep there. They even go so far as to dictate color schemes and roofing materials -- kind of like a silent homeowners association lying in wait for a neighbor to complain (and sue!).

I am curious if the wording on this divide-only-once restriction implies that the property can only be halved or if it simply says it can be subdivided only once. I suspect the former is true. Also, is there a minimum lot size spelled out for post-divide parcels? That would provide some clarity.

Again, any vagueness therein could be your ticket to declaratory and injunctive relief if a judge determines such loose wording makes the covenant unenforceable. Judges have been known to invalidate covenants if other owners have violated them repeatedly or if they're of questionable legality. (Restrictive covenants were once used to keep minorities out of neighborhoods, and such covenants may no longer be enforced.) But don't parcel off the land first then seek relief later. Some judges frown on that.

Other options: Restrictive covenants often have expiration dates such as 25 or 30 years. Also, sometimes there's an "out" for certain barred activities as long as the owner gets the written permission of all other neighborhood residents. Check for these loopholes. Since your plan would increase the neighborhood's density, you might run into resistance.

In some cases, especially when there's some "common good" neighborhood issue involved, the city might file a restrictive covenant amendment to approve the usage change on your behalf. However, this is more prevalent when a residential property is about to be used for commercial or municipal purposes.

Before you go too far with any of these processes, be sure there are no overlying community zoning restrictions or land-preservation issues that would keep you from subdividing in the first place, regardless of what your covenant says. Contact your city or county planning or zoning department to determine what local zoning laws are in force and what the application process for subdividing entails.

Depending on how badly you want to turn one parcel into three and how much money is at stake, you might need legal representation should you need to straight-arm any neighborhood resistance. Good luck!
